Paying online

We’re buying more and more online. A couple of taps or clicks is all it takes for us to drop some new clothes, tickets or holidays into our online shopping basket and pay for them by card or with our smartphone. But how does paying online work in practice? And is it secure?

You can pay in these online stores

We offer a range of ways to pay through us online, so you'll be able to use at least one of your KBC Brussels payment cards in virtually every online store. This includes websites that display these logos:

Bancontact logo

Maestro logo

Mastercard logo

Paying in online stores is safer

When paying for your purchase, you’ll have to prove that it's you by combining two of the following three characteristics:

  • Something you know (e.g., your PIN)
  • Something you own (e.g., your card reader or your smartphone)
  • Something that’s yours (e.g., your fingerprint)

You can use your payment card not only for one-time purchases, but also to pay for subscriptions (such as Netflix or Spotify). The merchant requests your permission to pay the subscription based on your card details.
You see clearly in advance what you’re consenting to:

  • The amount of the first payment
  • The amount of the following payments
  • The frequency of payment (e.g., monthly)
  • The merchant you give your consent to (e.g., Netflix)

The details you see vary depending on the type of subscription.

Yes, strong customer authentication applies to all European players. If you want to buy something online from a European online store, you'll more and more frequently have to prove that it's you by combining two of the three characteristics.

In certain cases, it’s not mandatory to do this (for example, when it concerns low-value online payments).

How to keep it safe

Paying safely and securely online: some tips

Even though paying online is safe, remember to stay alert at all times.

  • Keep your codes secret. They are the keys to unlocking your money.
  • Our employees will never ask for your codes, not even in emergencies.
  • Watch out for suspicious behaviour. KBC Brussels will always use the same way to authorise payment orders.
  • Always check the amount and the account number.
  • Make sure your desktop, smartphone and tablet are properly protected.
