Are you planning to become a dog owner? As you well know, a dog can bring joy, warmth and companionship into a home. But it’s also worth remembering they can sometimes cause damage or injury. That’s why your dog is also automatically covered by KBC Brussels’s family insurance policy.
Your four-legged friend is a part of your family, so it’s only right that they should be covered by your insurance too. Any damage, loss or injury they cause is covered, meaning you avoid running up unexpected costs and have peace of mind knowing you’re properly insured.
What risks should you take into account?
Even though dogs are lovely pets, they are still animals which means you can never completely rule out certain risks. And the consequences can sometimes be very serious. Therefore, bear these situations in mind:
- Bite incidents: Even a trustworthy dog can suddenly bite, even though it may be really familiar with the victim.
- Road traffic accidents: An unexpected noise or sudden movement startles your dog, causing it to run into the street and get injured or cause an accident.
- Accidents while playing: Larger dogs in particular are extremely powerful. While playing, someone could accidentally get knocked over and suffer serious contusions or a fracture.
Family insurance: multi-risk protection
The risks discussed above can quickly lead to high costs. Family insurance ensures you are better protected in such situations, as it covers any bodily injury, material and non-material loss or damage that you or a family member – including your dog – causes to others in the private sphere.
If your dog causes loss, damage or injury to another individual, you are always liable. In that case, family insurance will provide compensation to the victim, meaning you don't have to bear those costs yourself.

What is and isn’t covered?
- Loss, damage or injury caused to other individuals
We will compensate the person who suffered the loss, damage or injury. The policy also covers any loss, damage or injury caused by your animals to other individuals.
- Loss, damage or injury caused by the actions of another person
We’ll help you get compensation from the liable party to cover the damage. If they are unable to pay, we’ll pay up to 12 500 euros in compensation. This figure is doubled in the case of bodily injuries.
- Loss, damage or injury which you cause to yourself or family members
- Loss, damage or injury caused by serious misconduct on the part of a member of your family aged 18 or older (e.g., acts of violence, theft, vandalism)
- Loss, damage or injury caused intentionally by a member of your family aged 16 or older
- Loss, damage or injury caused by your riding horses or by animals that you, as a private individual residing in Belgium, are not allowed to keep
- Fines and out-of-court settlements
- Disputes in which you are involved as the owner or driver of a motor vehicle that is subject to compulsory motor insurance
Good to know
- This product is governed by the laws of Belgium.
- Insurance cover under this policy is valid for a term of one year and is tacitly renewed unless you terminate it no later than three months before the main renewal date.
- Your intermediary is the first point of contact for any complaints you may have.
