Why go for this insurance?

Internet use is on the rise. That unfortunately includes criminals, with some 10% of Internet users in Belgium reporting financial loss due to cybercrime (based on 2015 Eurostat figures). This insurance helps compensate financial losses from online fraud or identity theft.

You could also fall fowl of cyberbullying or damage to your reputation online. This insurance helps reduce the consequences of this happening.

Some examples of online fraud:

  • You receive an urgent e-mail from 'the police'. It contains a reminder to pay a fine ... but there's no mention of the location or your number plate
  • You receive an e-mail with congratulations. The reason? You've allegedly won the lottery ... but to receive your prize you first have to pay a small fee to a 'notary public'
  • You've seen an impressive 4K television at a substantially high discount ... but the online shop turns out to be false. Once you've ordered, your money is gone and the television is never delivered

• Preferably place orders at reliable online shops in Belgium and our neighbouring countries. Because of the accessibility you'll have more chance to solve any problems by e-mail, telephone or, if possible, on the spot
• Do your homework by first checking reviews from other customers
• Pay only using a secure payment service and Internet connection. Avoid using free or public Wi-Fi for purchases
• Update your operating system and security software to the most recent version
• Be wary of ads with implausible promotions or miracle products. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

What’s insured?

1. Internet fraud

What can you expect?

On the Internet, fraudsters may present themselves as public authorities, merchants or professional service providers. Using fake websites, false entitlements and permits, or other forms of subterfuge, they use so-called e-scams in an attempt to mislead you. If the fraudsters succeed in their intent, KBC Brussels repays the amounts you paid using your KBC Brussels Current Account due to being deceived.

You may also fall victim to e-fraud, whereby a third party succeeds in misusing your KBC Brussels Current Account on the Internet to make unwanted payments without your permission. In that case, KBC Brussels also repays those amounts.

What’s excluded?

  • Payments on auction websites and online marketplaces where private individuals can sell products
  • Fraud committed before you have taken out insurance, even if your account is debited afterwards

2. Online identity theft

What can you expect?

A third party could manage to steal your identification or authentication details online. Personal data such as your name, address, national registration number, e-mail address, passwords can then be misused on the Internet. If you suffer financial loss due to such an identity theft, KBC Brussels provides compensation.

What’s excluded?

  • Protection provided by credit card companies in the case of misuse of credit cards
  • Identity theft committed before you have the insurance, even if a claim arises afterwards

3. Online reputation damage

What can you expect?

If someone maliciously accuses you online of committing an offence and thereby harms your reputation, we refer to slander and defamation. In addition, sensitive information about you could be unlawfully published on the Internet.

If you suffer damage to your reputation online as a result of this, we put you in contact with a specialist service provider who will advise you remotely and, if necessary, take action in order to prevent further loss.

What’s excluded?

  • Reputation damage suffered before having the insurance

This insurance costs 3 euros a month per account or 6 euros a month for all family accounts (see the conditions of cover for what we mean by family). What you pay for the insurance is debited monthly from the KBC Brussels Current Account you specified when taking out this insurance.

For one account you pay 36 euros a year (32.95 euros + 3.05 euros in tax). This amount includes acquisition costs (estimated at 11.34 euros) and administration charges (estimated at 2.39 euros).

For all family accounts you pay 72 euros a year (65.90 euros + 6.10 euros in tax). This amount includes acquisition costs (estimated at 22.67 euros) and administration charges (estimated at 4.79 euros).

It's important to remember that, if you intend to compare a number of insurance policies, you cannot just compare their estimated costs and charges with each other. You have to take other factors into consideration too, such as the scope of the cover, the amount of any deductibles and the exclusion clauses.

The above amounts give a better idea of the portion of the premium used for covering the risk described in the insurance policy. It is indeed so that, after the taxes, acquisition costs and administration charges have been deducted, the rest of the premium comprises the portion of the premium applied to performing the contractually stipulated services and costs other than those referred to above (i.e. including the combined and shared costs involved in claims and their management).
These estimates are based on figures from the insurance company's most recent accounting period, as approved by its general meeting of shareholders.
