Did you know that nearly 90% of Belgians have family insurance?

family insurance

Family insurance covers you for personal third-party liability. If someone suffers loss, damage or injury as a result of you being clumsy, negligent or forgetful or because of your children or dog, they could sue you for compensation. Family insurance covers you for this. The other way around, if you suffer loss, damage or injury because of someone else's mistake or negligence, our legal assistance policy in the context of your private life provides you with the necessary legal support and assistance to seek compensation for this damage. It is included as standard in your family insurance if you take it out through KBC Brussels Touch. Ask us today what KBC Family Insurance can do for you.

Family insurance isn't obligatory, yet nearly all Belgians have it for their family. You really can't do without it, especially if you have children. Little accidents can have big consequences. Say the worst happened and you paralysed someone. You could be paying for the rest of your life. KBC Family Insurance covers you in such situations for a relatively low premium.

If you need more than the standard insurance it provides, you can add cover like legal assistance insurance or insurance for your dog.

Four common claims

The family insurance claims we see most often are for things like

  • Water leaks in bathrooms causing damage in a neighbouring property
  • Accidental damage to other people's smartphones with cracked screens
  • Damage caused by bikes between two parked cars accidentally leaving scratches
  • Felled trees falling the wrong way causing damage to a neighbour's property

What does KBC Family Insurance cover?

Here are the main types of cover provided by our family insurance and some key exclusions.

Covered Not covered
Personal third-party liability (claims by someone outside your family involving loss you're liable for) Loss, damage or injury you cause to yourself or a member of your family
If you're liable, we'll pay the compensation Loss, damage or injury due to gross misconduct by a member of your family aged 18 or over (including violence, theft and vandalism)
All those who live with you Loss, damage or injury caused intentionally by a member of your family aged 16 or over
Loss, damage or injury caused by your animals to other individuals Loss, damage or injury caused by your riding horses or by animals you're not allowed to keep as a private individual resident in Belgium

KBC Family Insurance runs for one year and renews automatically unless you cancel it no later than three months before the principal renewal date.

Compensation and deductible

family insurance
  • We provide cover of up to 25 million euros for bodily injuries and there's no deductible to pay
  • We provide cover of up to 7 million euros for property damage; you pay a deductible of around 249 euros per claim

These sums are linked to the consumer price index.

Personal liability insurance with legal assistance

Personal liability insurance with legal assistance

If you want to sue someone, say, for medical malpractice, our personal liability insurance with legal assistance is a big help. That's why we include it along with personal third-party liability insurance as part of our standard policy to make sure you're well and truly insured.

If you need it, we'll call in specialist help like lawyers, doctors or loss adjusters. We cover fees and outlays up to 100 000 euros per claim and for all beneficiaries combined. We don't apply a deductible or minimum amount, so we cover the full legal expenses.

What's included

  • If you sustain loss, damage or injury, we'll help you get compensation from the liable party.
  • If they're unable to pay compensation, we'll pay it up to 12 500 euros under certain conditions. In the event of bodily injuries, we'll pay a further 12 500 euros.
  • If you're suspected of an unintentional offence, we'll arrange a lawyer to defend you if you're summonsed to appear in court.

There are a number of things we don't insure. These include fines and out-of-court settlements, offences like vandalism or fighting and disputes involving motor vehicle owners and drivers.

Claims involving performance of a contract are only insured if you've added our personal liability insurance with legal assistance including contractual disputes under your policy.

Add personal liability insurance with legal assistance including contractual disputes

Comprehensive legal assistance insurance provides the same cover as our personal legal assistance insurance above, bar one key difference: coverage for legal support in contractual disputes for when you travel or make large purchases. Disputes must be for over 200 euros.

Consumer disputes could include when a

  • New TV doesn't work and the shop refuses to replace it
  • Landlord refuses to fix a broken front door
  • Seller of a building plot you're buying suddenly raises their asking price after signing the pre-contract
  • New boiler or kitchen you've had installed is badly fitted
  • Luxury cruise you booked turns out to be on an old rust-bucket

Get extra insurance for your dog

extra insurance for your dog

Our standard policy covers your liability for any loss, damage or injury that your dog causes to someone outside your family. However, that's not all that can go wrong, whether it involves your dog or someone else's. You can protect yourself against this by adding our dog insurance, a type of accident insurance policy.

What's insured?

  • If your dog bites someone, we'll pay them compensation up to 1.5 million euros, even if you're not liable. It doesn’t matter who's bitten: a family member, the babysitter, the postman, whoever.
  • We also pay up to 1.5 million euros in compensation for bodily injuries if another dog bites a member of your family, even if the dog's owner is never tracked down or they don't have the money to pay the compensation.
  • If your dog is injured in a traffic accident, we'll cover up to 2 000 euros in vet's fees and – in the worst-case scenario – cremation expenses of up to 350 euros. We'll even cover the cost of buying a new puppy of a similar breed.
  • If you're hospitalised and there's nobody to take care of your dog, we'll cover the cost of kennels up to 300 euros per claim.

We don't apply a deductible, so we pay from the first euro.

There are a number of things we don't insure. These include vet's fees if your dog is unwell or accidents not involving traffic in which your dog is the victim (like a fight with another dog) and dogs you keep or breed professionally.
